Bill Richardson's Campaign Staff Doesn't Know What They Are Doing!!!

Published May 19, 2007, 4AM PST

Bill Richardson is actually one of our favorite candidates to win the Democratic nomination. He runs a clean campaign. He focuses attention on the positives and not the negatives. He has an exceptional resume, a great sense of humor and most importantly is that he is rising in the polls.

But we just noticed something very wrong. The campaign staff are paying for completely irrelevant ads to promote Bill Richardson. If Bill knew about this, he most certainly would object to it.

Advertising Their Contribution Page to Unrelated Keywords. For example, I did a search for "2008 Election Polls" and there is a Bill Richardson link that says 2008 Election Polls but when you click on it, it takes you to a form that asks for money. People looking for election polls are not going to donate readily. Specifically to a candidate like Bill Richardson who is still relatively unknown nationally.

What they Should Do Instead. His campaign staff would be better off linking the keyword "2008 Election Polls" to a related article about polls on their site. They should hype up how he has double digit support in New Hampshire or how he is our underdog candidate most likely to win. Maybe that will help foster interest in his campaign instead of wasting money on horrible leads.

Google Tracking. Second of all, google tracks how long a visitor spends on a site that uses its advertising campaign. The majority of people clicking on the "2008 Election Polls" link would expect to see polling data but when they realize it is not, they will immediately leave. This would then show google that the ad is not very relevant and force the advertiser to pay more than it should for the link.

Spam. What they are doing is effectively spamming the keyword "2008 Election Polls" with irrelevant content, why not spam more heavily searched keywords like "Presidential Polls", etc... There must have been some young campaign staffer that decided this was the best way to increase traffic to the contributions page but its not.

The Mathematics of it All. Let's say the Richardson campaign is paying roughly 15 cents a click. That is probably a bit high based on their ad placement and keywords that they are choosing but as more candidates start to advertise, it will be dead on. And of all the people they get clicking on their ads, only 1 in 1000 donate to their campaign. I make this estimation because if your lead is very targeted, you would expect to convert 1 in 100 people. But these leads are untargeted. So if it turns out to be 1 in 1000 people that they converted. They would spend $150 per donation. I doubt everybody donating to their campaign is averaging that much. So in essence, they are wasting money that could be better spent hyping up their campaigns.

There has been a lot of positive polling results for Richardson to link to. So if you are in anyway near to the Richardson campaign, please send him this link and/or contact us through usaelectionpolls@gmail.com. At least this way we can give him advice on how to save money.
