Bill Richardson Must Do Well With Hispanics

May 27, 2007

There are a couple of very strategic moves that Bill Richardson has done lately to appeal to Hispanics. In fact, he has been trying to appeal to them for a long time. No candidate can win the Democratic nomination solely on the backs of the Hispanic vote, a candidate must do well with the entire electorate but things with Bill Richardson are slightly different.

If you want to look at the Democratic candidates in a very blunt manner; it represents the biggest racial/gender sectors of America. You have one woman, one African-American, and one Caucasian Male. And if you include Bill Richardson into the mix; a Hispanic. There is no evidence in any of the polling data right now to support that people will vote based on race or gender. That is a good thing and just goes to show you how far the United States has come. God Bless America for that!

But Bill Richardson is different from his opponents for a couple of reasons.

  1. He is polling fourth and needs a motivated electorate to back him up and boost his campaign from mediocrity. That electorate could be the Hispanics.
  2. Most importantly, the states that Bill Richardson must do well in strategically have large Hispanic populations.

Bill Richardson's campaign knows this. He officially announced his candidacy in Los Angeles, CA; which holds a large Hispanic population and was the sight of the rally where policemen attacked Hispanic protesters.

The other major move that he generally does is makes all announcements in Spanish as well as English. For every English video you see of him on YouTube, you see a corresponding Spanish video.
