Dodd Grounded By Allegations of Crony Capitalism?

According to USA Election Polls, Chris Dodd, the senior senator from Connecticut, is plagued by single digit poll numbers. Even in Connecticut the original overall poll numbers decreased from February’s 11% to a meager 6% in May. No matter which poll data the nomination hopeful is seeing, there appears to be an almost insurmountable opposition to attaining the democratic nod for the nomination.

For staunch liberals this might be a bit of a surprise, since Chris Dodd is a loyal supporter of both the ACLU as well as Amnesty International. In favor of tort reform, it might ironically be the latter that prepared the rope on which his presidential hopes may be hanging. After all, Mr. Dodd has been accused of enacting tort reforms that would benefit the accounting industry which also turned out to be one of his greatest financial backers.

Yet Mr. Dodd’s problems do not end with the co-sponsoring of the Private Securities Litigation Reform Act of 1995, but instead are as far reaching as the inclusion of funds from Arthur Andersen and Enron in his campaign coffers. Quite obvious a lot of this is water under the bridge, but considering that the after effects are still felt today, Chris Dodd’s run for the party’s nomination may be compromised. Potentially deeming him to be more of a liability with the moderate conservative voters - while considering him a sure fire win with the more liberal set of the Democratic Party - the jury is still out whether or not he will have a chance at the coveted declaration.
