Quote: John McCain leads Barack Obama by five percentage points in Georgia for the second straight poll. The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey in the state has McCain ahead 52% to 47%. Support for both candidates is up one point from a poll conducted last week. Prior to that time, McCain held solid leads over the Democrat since the start of the campaign season. Though McCain�s lead has weakened in the state this month, this is still the fifth straight poll the Republican has received at least 50% support. Voters in Georgia continue to trust McCain more than Obama on the economy, 52% to 45%. However, unaffiliated voters trust the Democrat slightly more by a 47% to 45% margin. McCain also holds a solid advantage on national security issues. McCain�s favorability ratings have remained stable over the past week. He is viewed favorably by 57% and unfavorably by 43%. Obama�s ratings are 50% favorable, 49% unfavorable. That�s a slight improvement for the Democrat, who was viewed favorably by 48% in the previous poll. In the latest poll, Obama now leads 53% to 44% among unaffiliated voters in the state. Last week, McCain led those voters by an identical margin. McCain leads 73% to 26% among white voters in Georgia while Obama earns overwhelming support from black voters. While men favor McCain 55% to 45%, women are split between the candidates at 49% each.

Quote: Matt Towery on the presidential race: �Obama is doing better among white voters than Kerry did in 2004 (according to exit polls of that race), carrying some 28 percent of the white vote. He�s carrying around 75 percent both of the Hispanic and �other� vote, which makes up between four and five percent of Georgia�s electorate. He is winning among independents, outside of the margin of error of the poll. �While this is a tight race, the problem for McCain is that all but 3 percent of whites have made their decision and approximately 8 percent of black voters have continued to say they are undecided or voting �other.� This will likely move closer to 95 percent for Obama when all said and done. Obama has room to go up. �If the race were to remain the way it is today, you won�t see these numbers come to fruition until very late in the night of Nov. 4 or perhaps the next day. The early numbers will likely show McCain ahead, as the counties where Obama is doing best are some of the largest counties and will be the slowest to report.�

Quote: However, while Obama continues to gain ground, this is the fourth straight poll of Georgia voters to find McCain at the 50% level of support or above. In August, McCain led Obama 50% to 43%. Sixty-eight percent (68%) of voters in the state expect McCain to win Georgia on Election Day. Just 36% of Georgia voters agree with Obama�s quote that when you spread the wealth around, it�s good for everyone. Fifty percent (50%) disagree. Fifty-seven percent (57%) of Georgia voters have a favorable opinion of McCain, including 37% with a Very Favorable opinion. For Obama, 48% have a favorable view, including an amazing 42% with a Very Favorable opinion. The bad news for Obama is that 51% of Georgia voters still voice an unfavorable opinion about him. Only 42% say the same about McCain. McCain is supported by 70% of white voters, Obama by 92% of African-American voters.

Quote: Just a little noise in the MoE the last two weeks, as Martin's one-point deficit is now two points. Same thing in the presidential race, just a little noise. The race is static right now. Chambliss has gone negative on Martin in the last week, and so far it appears to be having little effect. Martin's white support remains unchanged at 26 percent. Georgia Democrats tell me that they need to get to 30 percent for a chance of winning. Well, either that or a killer African American turnout. And so far, so good on that front. Georgia Democrats -- both this Senate race and the presidential are winnable. So GOTV, GOTV, GOTV! And everyone else who wants to help a true progressive give the odious Saxby Chambliss his comeuppance, give Jim Martin some coin to fight the Chambliss smear machine. Don't ever forget what he did to Max Cleland.
