Women Given Obama The Edge in Maine: In an election for President of the United States in Maine today, 09/24/08, Democrat Barack Obama defeats Republican John McCain 49% to 44%, according to this SurveyUSA poll conducted exclusively for WCSH-TV Portland and WLBZ-TV Bangor. Obama's lead comes entirely from women. The candidates are effectively tied among men. McCain runs strong among gun owners, Pro-Life voters, those who say the United States is still a Super Power, and those who attend religious services regularly. Obama runs strong among college graduates, among lower-income voters, among Pro-Choice voters, and among voters who almost never attend religious services. Obama carries by 5 points both Southern Maine -- which corresponds to Maine's 1st congressional district -- and Northern Maine -- which corresponds to Maine's 2nd congressional district. This means that in an election today, Obama would pick-up all 4 of the state's Electoral College votes. Absentee ballots became available in Maine during the course of the field period for this poll. 7% of Maine voters say they have already voted. Obama leads both among those who have already voted, and among those who have not yet voted.

I polled this back in October of last year, and seeing the bleak numbers, moved on to other races. This was an attempt to see if Allen had closed the gap in the past 10 months or so, and unfortunately, the answer appears to be "no".

These results are generally in line with the Pollster.com composite, which is Collins 54, Allen 41.1.

In the presidential, the state is still an Obama landslide, Obama 52, McCain 38. Full crosstabs below the fold.
