Quote: McCain is now viewed favorably by 60% of Washington voters, up eight points from 52% in the previous survey. Obama is viewed favorably by 58%, which is essentially unchanged. As for the running mates, Biden is viewed favorably by 56%, Palin by 51%. However, feelings are much stronger about Palin�39% voice a Very Favorable opinion of her while 31% have a Very Unfavorable view. For Biden, the comparable numbers are 26% Very Favorable and 22% Very Unfavorable. Among unaffiliated voters, McCain is viewed favorably by 66%, Obama by 55%, Palin by 53%, and Biden by 49%. Fifty-one percent (51%) say that Palin was the right choice for McCain to make while 40% say that Biden was the right choice for Obama. By a 53% to 36% margin, unaffiliated voters say McCain made the right choice. Thirty-five percent (35%) of unaffiliateds say that Obama made the right choice while 33% disagree. Seventy-six percent (76%) of Obama voters say they�re voting enthusiastically for their candidate while 19% are voting primarily against McCain. Sixty-nine percent (69%) of McCain voters are voting enthusiastically for him while 27% are voting primarily against Obama. In an election today, 09/08/08, eight weeks till votes are counted, it's Obama 49%, McCain 45%. Compared to an identical SurveyUSA poll 4 weeks ago (before both candidates had named their running mates), Obama is down 2 points; McCain is up 1. Compared to an identical SurveyUSA poll 8 weeks ago, Obama is down 6; McCain is up 6. Obama led by 17 points in June, led by 16 points in July, led 8 points in August, leads 4 points today. Among voters with no college education, there is continuing movement to McCain. Obama led by 15 points in July, now trails by 8, a 23-point erosion. Among voters who earn less than $50K a year, there is continuing movement to McCain. Obama's once 26-point lead among the lower-income group is now 5 points, a 21-point erosion. Among voters older than McCain, Obama had led by 24 points in July, now trails by 1, a 25-point erosion. McCain always has run well among Conservatives, but his advantage among Conservatives has grown from 4:1 in May to 11:1 today. In Eastern Washington state, Obama led 5:4 in June, but McCain leads 2:1 today. Among women , McCain is up 9 points from June, Obama is down 11 points from June. McCain had been gaining ground among female voters before he picked Sarah Palin. That continues. Among men , Obama leads by 4 today, a 5-point shift toward Obama from last month, when McCain led by 1. This is one of the few bright spots in today's poll data for the Democrats. Among voters older than John McCain, Obama's lead has fallen from 24 points to 8 points. Among those voters in between the two candidates' ages, Obama had led by 10, now leads by 4. Obama has lost ground and McCain has gained ground among every demographic group. One month ago, 14% of Republicans crossed over to vote for Democrat Obama; today, 6% do so. McCain now gets 90% of Republican votes. Obama is up slightly among Democrats; one month ago, he took 87% of Democratic votes; today, he takes 91%. One month ago, Obama led by 7 among independents; today, he trails by 2. In Metro Seattle, Obama led by 29, now leads by 15. In the remainder of Western Washington, Obama had led by 11, now leads by 8. In Eastern Washington, McCain had led by 11, now leads by 13.

Forty-five percent (45%) believe that most reporters are trying to help Barack Obama win the election while just 10% believe they are trying to help McCain. Those assessments are similar to the views of voters nationwide. Obama attracts 89% of the Democratic vote while McCain is supported by 90% of Republicans. Among unaffiliated voters, Obama leads 53% to 41%. Last month, Obama enjoyed a nine-point lead. Obama is viewed favorably by 57% of Washington voters, McCain by 52%. Those figures are down slightly for both men over the past month.
