» Commentary by Kris Lazaro (registered Democrat)

In a recent Rasmussen telephone survey Americans were asked which form of economy they would prefer: interestingly, a huge majority (77%) prefered a free market economy over one managed by the government. This is a huge contrast over another recent poll that found that Americans were losing favor over capitalism (only 53% favored capitalism mover socialism in that poll).

This author is confused. Is not capitalism the same as a free market economy?

People have been influenced by recent events that showed what can happen when capitalism goes haywire, and this is perhaps why capitalism was seen as being bad. The free market idea as seen through Americans, on the other hand, remains harmless throughout this ordeal.

What is the difference? To this author, capitalism is a very good idea but it should have some government regulations. Companies cannot have ultimate freedom and the government cannot have a laissez-faire approach to the economy. There must be oversight and some control, lest we repeat history once more.
