Americans In Favor Of Stem Cell Research

• 38% say to ease current restrictions to allow more research
• 14% say to place no restrictions on government funding
• 22% say to keep current restrictions, 19% say to not fund at all

As Barack Obama has recently signed a bill that will lift the restrictions on embryonic stem cell research, many Americans (especially scientists) are relieved that the war on science is finally over.

The prior administration often road-blocked science and its advancements by placing legislations to block its progress. Often, the government would edit text that scientists have submitted in order to debunk scientific theories such as global warming.

We now have a president who actually cares about progress.

In the issue of stem cell research, this author is ecstatic. As a neurobiologist major in college, this author is excited about the possibilities that lie ahead: we might finally be able to cure some diseases with the help of omnipotent cells and the like.

Healthcare will now also change, as researchers develop more cures, and hopefully will one day finally cure cancer and AIDS. One can only hope of the possibilities.

But, as a Catholic, this author is also worried that this new technology will bring about unethical practices such as cloning.

As the president has stated, cloning is immoral and should not be the end goal of this new technology. We must be careful in this respect.

But, in the end, Science is again free from the political bounds of Washington.
