From Rasmussen Reports

  • Of those asked, 58% of voters oppose government-controlled healthcare if it means getting rid of their current healthcare coverage
  • In a survey in July (of this year), 68% of Americans rated health care in this country as fair or poor
  • In the same survey conducted this past July, 69% gave good or excellent marks to their own health insurance coverage and were very reluctant to change it.

Are Americans ready for universal healthcare? It seems to this author that after these polling numbers, Americans just do not understand the meaning of universal healthcare. Perhaps many fear the bureacracy of government-controlled healthcare, and the inadequate services many opponents of this idea love to proclaim. Or is it just that those polled were rich, affluent Americans?

Most in this country are undercovered by their health insurances. Therefore, this author cannot understand why 68% of Americans rated health care in this country as fair or poor and yet they do not want change. It is this author's opinion that government-controlled healthcare is not bad. If every American is covered, this country would be investing in preventative medicine, rather than treating diseases after the fact--in fact in other countries where universal healthcare is practiced, overall health and well-being is higher than compared to the U.S.

We need to stop mistrusting government and let them mandate universal health care. We have already socialized the post office, schools, police and fire departments, and the sort, so why not hospitals?
