Americans Planning To Spend Less For Christmas Gifts This Year12/13/08 Tags: Economy From Gallup
» Commentary by Kris Lazaro (registered Democrat) Christmas is just around the corner, but there is still no tangible economic relief in sight. As such, Americans are now forced to spend less for Christmas gifts this year due to a slowing economy. According to a recent poll conducted by Gallup, about 45% of Americans plan to spend less on gifts as in previous years. Sadly, Santa Claus and his elves may have to slow toy production this year to accomodate this global recession. The true meaning of Christmas, though ironic, is not about buying gifts. Christmas has been so commercialized throughout the last few decades that many have forgotten the real meaning of the holiday. It is true that giving and receiving gifts is a great byproduct of this holiday, but it is not the only reason. We, too often, get mired in the monotony of everyday life that we often forget to realize what is truly important in life: spending time with our friends and family. So what if we are unable to buy that new gaming system for our kids, or that new plasma tv for the living room, it is more important to have and appreciate each other during this season. Gifts are not everything. We must start to refocus our priorities and stray from the commercialism of this holiday, lest we forget the real reason for the season.
