» Commentary by Kris Lazaro (registered Democrat)

As America faces a trillion dollar deficit, and our economy continues to suffer, any semblance of economic revenue should be sought after. The issue of marijuana, its legalization and taxation has sparked new conversations, as the country tries to find ways to generate money.

To this author, legalization of marijuana is not only smart but necessary. This 'drug' is no different than a cigarette and, in fact, is probably more healthier than a regular cigarette. Marijuana has some healing properties, as evidenced by its use by terminally ill patients. Cigarettes, on the other hand, are more dangerous and cause multiple health problems.

The time is now for legalization: we need to generate more cash for fedearl coffers and end an antiquated ideology of the 'evils' of marijuana. Because truly, the only real opponenets of the legalization of marijuana are the tobacco companies and the right-wing conservatives who own them.
