With today marking Charles Darwin's birthday, we take a look at how Americans view the theory of evolution. In a recent Gallup poll, it showed that only 4 in 10 Americans actually believe in his theory of natural selection. Church attendance and education were correlated with the responses (with those with less education denying the theory, and those with regular church attendance thinking likewise).

This is often a very touchy subject, but one that has to be discussed, since many elected officials often based their legislation on personal beliefs. To this author, the theory of evolution is undeniable. But, Darwin's theory is not airtight. We will not go into detail, but as this author's academic background is Neurobiology, let us suffice it to say that Darwin's theory leaves out one thing: how and why in the geological calendar do we see sudden 'bursts' of speciation and then relative statsis). As a Catholic with a scientific background, this author has always struggled with this theory.

Religion and science will always be hot topics. But ones that always engenders great discourse.
