Although, as a group, conservatives still trail the liberals and moderates in accepting gay people in the military, a recent Gallup poll suggests that conservatives are starting to soften their stand on the topic. Five years ago, the same poll was taken and revealed that only 46% of conservatives favored openly gay men and women in the military. This year's findings reveal a 12 point jump amongst conservatives.

This poll suggests that homosexuality is starting to become accepted in society, albeit in indirect terms. Military service should not be based on a person's sexual preference, rather, their ability and intent to serve their country.

A gay person has as much a right to do or have anything this country as any other "straight" citizen. This author is relieved that gay rights and the homosexual movement is finally being accepted by society.

It is never right to judge another human being because they are different than everybody else, especially if they are not harming anybody else. Years from now we as a society will look back and compare this movement with another one that occurred during the 1960s and realize how similar both events were and how ignorant some of us have become.
