Majority Of Americans Favor Immigration Status Checks During Traffic Stops3/18/09 Tags: Immigration From Rasmussen (conducted: 3/14-15/09)
» Commentary by Kris Lazaro (registered Democrat) Illegal immigration should not be demonized. A recent Rasmussen Reports telephone survey found that a whopping majority of Americans (73%) support immigration status checks during routine traffic stops. This comes at the heels of an incident involving an Arizona sheriff who overstepped his jurisdiction and investigated a defendant's immigrant status after a traffic stop. This hot button topic does have great arguments on both sides, but according to this author, these types of checks during traffic stops may border on comprising all of our civil liberties. Illegal immigration is indeed illegal, but those who break this law should not be forced to leave the country, unless extreme circumstances permit (such as if said offender has committed murder, arson, and the like). Those found to be illegal with no great criminal backgrounds should pay a fine and/or imprisoned for a reasonable amount of time, and then be able to circulate into the general public (including paying taxes). Let us not forget that this country was founded on immigration, and for that fact, we should not be so quick to judge--the majority of those who choose to come into this country illegaly are only choosing a better life for themselves and for their families, a sentiment that is central to every American's heart.
