From Rasmussen (conducted: 4/6-7/09)

  • 45% of those polled said Americans enter politics to protect themselves from what the government might do
  • 44% said Americans enter politics to help make the country better
  • 12% are not sure

In a recent Rasmussen telephone survey, the polling organization found some startling new information. When asked why Americans entered public life and serve as government officials, almost half (45%) said that Americans entered politics to protect themsselves from the government.

Only 44% said that Americans entered politics to help the country better itself.

This sad ideology stems from the fact that most Americans do not believe that government works. A majority feel that the big bad government is against them, while all the way, the truth of the matter is, government is by the people and for the people.

Government should not be feared, rather it should be a tool used to help society, and therefore politicians are public servants who seek to better the society in which they live.
