From Rasmussen Reports (conducted: 2/24-25/09)

  • Among Republicans, 83% trust people more than politicians
  • 20% of Democrats trust America's political leaders more than the American people

In a recent Rasmussen telephone survey, the polling report showed that an overwhelming amount of the American people do no trust the judgment of politicians. While this may be true, let us not say that the American people should entirely be trustable.

People, on the whole are good, but, they are not perfect. The public often cheat and become greedy.

Elected officials, on the other hand, have an obligation to their constituents to follow their voice and hence carry out their intentions. In recent history, though, elected politicians have often failed. Notwithstanding, this should not entirely discredit all politicans.

When it comes to finances, we all must work together to sustain a healthy economy. Government intervention and personal responsibility should go hand in hand; for if one side dominates, the results will be disastrous.

If left to the people, personal responsibility regarding the economy will lead to greed. People will not pay their fair share and will hide it in offshore banks, as many often do today. But, with too much government oversight, we also run the risk of too much government control over our lives, thus limiting our freedoms.

The key thing in this issue is balance: we must have a healthy mixture of both government intervention and personal responsibility to achieve the best possible results.
