US Catholics' Views On Issues3/30/09 Tags: Religion From Gallup (conducted: 3/25-26/09)
» Commentary by Kris Lazaro (registered Democrat) A recent Gallup poll found that US Catholics are really no different than US non-Catholics in certain issues. Such issues as abortion, divorce, and embryonic stem cells research are some topics that US Catholics and non-Catholics agree upon. In terms of abortion, 40% of Catholics believe it is morally acceptable, while 41% of non-Catholics believe likewise. Divorce is actually looked upon as more favorable with Catholics (71%) than non-Catholics (66%). Thirdly, stem cell research again shows congruence between Catholics (63% believe it is morally acepptable) and non-Catholics (62% believe the same). These data clearly show that US Catholics are no different than non-US Catholics regarding some key socio-political issues. This may subdue further criticism of the President and his liberal views from some Catholics as he gives the commencement speech and receives his honorary degree from Notre Dame later this year.
